High quality footwear is expensive, so to make your footwear last, you must take care of them and protect your investment. Even less expensive footwear must be maintained in order to last. If you abuse your footwear, they will wear out quicker and that is not the manufacturer's fault or the retailer's fault, it is your fault alone! If your footwear is polish able, keep them clean and polished. If rough out leather, use a suede brush to keep them clean and air dry when wet, do not kick them in the corner where they may stay wet all night, it's not good for your feet or the footwear's longevity. Do not drag your feet when you walk.
Put your best foot forward for foot protection. It's easy to forget about safety shoes and other work footwear as long as your feet don't hurt. But to adequately protect yourself against foot hazards, shoes/boots need proper care and maintenance just like any other apparel. To get the best protection from your work shoes/boots, you should:
- Wipe wet or soiled shoes with a clean cloth or paper towel.
- Air out work shoes after work, and check regularly for signs of damage or wear.
- Have worn or damaged shoes repaired, or replace them.
- Change socks during the lunch break to keep feet and shoes dry if feet sweat a lot.
